Expectations for Advanced Chemistry
Journaling: You will need to subscribe to a periodical or electronic periodical that pertains to chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry or biotechnology. As a student in an advanced science class it is important that you are able to correlate in class learning with the world about you. You will need to conduct current readings in science and be prepared to discuss your findings.
Possible Journal sites from the internet |
|
About.com (chemistry) | The Scientist |
Science magazine | HMS Beagle and BioMedNet |
Journal of biochemistry | Science Daily |
Biochemical journal | |
You will want to take a look at each of these and see which is most appropriate for you. If there are other sites that offer the same
information without having to pay for subscription fees, feel free, but please
let me know first.
Seminars: You will be expected to attend at least 2 seminars at UNL in chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry or biotechnology per semester. I will post seminar schedules as soon as they become available. You will be expected to document:
Lecture topic
Lecturer
Where the lecture was held
Major points of talk
Comments and questions you may have
Be prepared for questions/answers. (As I do make it to some of these)
Grading: You will be graded on a total points basis. I will follow the grade scale already established in Regular & Diff Chemistry classes. The topics of Organic & Biochemistry are sometimes difficult. Please use all available resources to help you understand our learning objectives. Study groups are excellent sources of aid, inspiration, or compassion. Get one started and keep it going. The information documented in both 1 (journaling) and 2 (seminars) can provide "inspiration" for me to consider grades.
As most of you are aware, I cannot read minds, although I may know what you are thinking at times. It is important that you are proactive in the classroom. When you have questions or need something explained again, ASK. Being shy and reserved in the classroom is not helpful when you are trying to learn. Remember, it’s your grade and nothing should get in the way of you doing your best.
