Process:
A. Become the reporter. Pick a role from the list below:

Editorial Reporter - your job is to research and create a news segment about resistance to slavery.
Some questions to answer in your segment should include:
1. How did slaves try to resist the plantation owners?
2. What are some examples of slave revolts and who lead them?
3. What was the Underground Railroad and how did it help slaves resist slavery?
4. In what other ways did slaves try to resist the bonds of slavery?

Legal Reporter - your job is to research and create a news segment about the laws regarding slavery?
Some questions to answer in your segment should include:
1. What kinds of laws were passed that helped make slavery possible in the US?
- find laws from various places around the US
- help us understand how these laws made enslavement of Africans possible.
- what are some of the ways that they classified slaves

Lifestyles Reporter- your job is to research and create a news segment about the personal experience of living as a slave in the United States.
Some questions to answer in your segment should include:
1. What was everyday life like?
2. What kinds of clothes did they wear?
3. What types of food did they eat?
4. Were slaves religious?
5. How did they feel about family, masters and living in slavery?

Business Reporter -
your job is to research and create a news segment about why slavery developed in the United States.
Some questions to answer in your segment should include:
1. Why did the US turn to a labor system based on servitude for life instead of indentured servitude?
2. Why was there such a need for slavery in the United States.
3. Why did slavery grow in the the South but die out in the North?

B. After having selected a role each student will be responsible for the following:

  • Researching information for your segment of the newscast.
  • Writing a script for your segment of the newscast.
  • Locating visual aids for your newscast.

C. After having collected your information, your group will be responsible for the
following:
  • Collaboratively creating a newscast. As a group you will decided on how you want your newscast to flow, create an overall narration for the entire newscast, create a set and finally tape your newscast.
  • Previewing and editing the final product.
  • Grading each others works as well as the final product.
