Task

Yellow Journalism

You will be completing several tasks as you explore the use of yellow journalism in the late 1800s. As you read headlines and news stories from the 1890s and today, think about the power of the media to influence individuals and world events. Be prepared to support or criticize this practice.

1. Using the Yellow Journalism Fact Sheet, you will collect as much information as you can about the practice of yellow journalism during the late 1800s and the competition between William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer.

2. Using a local newspaper's website, you will select an article and rewrite the headline and story using the style of Yellow Journalism. Be sure to use a “sensational” headline and exaggerated facts.

3. Using the Yellow Journalism Evaluation Form, you will read and evaluate another student’s story .
