Accolades
- The band received a superior rating from all judges at the 2007 KU Jazz Festival. Becky Segieda (trombone), Matt Marvin (piano), Tommy Krueger(trumpet), and Rachel Schmit (tenor sax) were selected as outstanding musicians at the festival.
The Southeast Jazz Ensemble I has received many group and individual
awards over the last 10-15 years. Some of these include:
- Selected by audition to perform as finalist at the Jazz at
Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington National Jazz Band Competition in
New York City
- Selected by audition to perform at the 1994 and 1999 Nebraska State Bandmasters Convention
- Superior ratings at every jazz festival entered since 1984
- At least 4 members of LSE Jazz I selected to the Nebraska All-State Jazz Band every year since its inception
- At least 5 members of LSE Jazz I selected to the NJO Young Lions All Star Band every year since its inception.
- Chris Steinke was awarded the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown award as
the top high school jazz alto saxophonist in the nation - this included
a performance by Chris at the International Association of Jazz
Educators convention in New Orleans.
- LSE Jazz I alum James Valentine (guitar) recieved a Grammy Award for best new artist as a member of the
pop/rock group Maroon 5.
- Elizabeth Love received the Outstanding Camper award at the 2003 KU Jazz Camp.
- Winners in the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra Young Artist competition from LSE Jazz I include 1997 winner Broc Hempel (piano), 1998
winner Chris Steinke (alto sax), 2002 winner Alex Levitov (tenor sax), and
2003 winner Tommy van den Berg (trombone).
