Mission Statement / Essential Element 4

Learning Climate & Environment

The library media program requires a safe, inviting, supportive and stimulating environment that encourages learning and exploration. The physical space is functional and designed to accommodate both large and small groups as well as individuals. The environment reflects a range of ethnicities and cultures so that students can see themselves and others reflected in materials and visual displays.

A climate and environment conducive to student learning includes:

  • Warm, welcoming, helpful professional and support staff
  • A student-centered program that develops positive attitudes toward information-based learning and collaboration
  • Well-organized collection of resources that are easy to find and use
  • Safe place to work and learn
  • Facilities that are physically accessible to all students
  • Seating and table space for individuals and classes
  • Appealing, stimulating physical surroundings
  • Clean environment with adequate lighting and ventilation
  • Appealing displays that reflect diversity
  • Flexible access and space that allows the use of the LMC by whole classrooms of learners as well as individual students and staff
  • Clear and understandable policies, procedures, and processes
  • Responsive to student, staff, and community input and needs.

Environment is important to learning because it is the context in which students construct their own knowledge and meaning through interaction with events, people, and ideas. Students need an environment where they feel welcome and secure. They also need to a place to pursue their own interests. A positive library media center climate and environment provides excitement, motivation and a stimulation to learn.
