* G.I.I.L.S provides educators with tools that will assist them
in defining, understanding and using the collaborative process.
Collaboration is teachers and library media specialists working
together to develop instruction. This section includes examples of
collaborative units for elementary, middle school and high school.
G.I.I.L.S has been integrated into other LPS district curriculum
guides eg. Reading/Language Arts.
* G.I.I.L.S gives teachers and library media specialists an
in-depth explanation of the Big6? Research Process. This research
model has been adopted by Lincoln Public Schools. It includes
strategies that enable students to apply, articulate and access
the research process. It also presents materials to support the
use of the Super 3 at the primary level. Lincoln Public Schools
believes knowing the research process is essential for all
students to be information literate. GIILS provides the framework
for teachers to teach and assess research skills to meet state
standards.
* The information literacy skills list found in G.I.I.L.S are
integrated throughout the curriculum for all grade levels. The
divisions include the general information literacy skills category
followed by the skills that link to each of the steps found in
Information Problem Solving: The Big Six Skills Approach to
Library & Information Skills Instruction by Robert Berkowitz
and Michael B. Eisenberg -©1987. All skills require continual
application for mastery.
* 90% of the G.I.I.L.S guide includes strategies for teachers
and library media specialists to use for learning and teaching
information literacy skills and the research process. These
include tips on writing effective questions, graphic organizers,
rubrics, citing sources (MLA & APA) and Internet search
tips.
